Chicago Dry Dock

In 1979 Haven Kern founded Kern Barge Cleaning and Repair to serve maritime customers in the Chicago area. Initially he and his business partner were cleaning barges from the back of a pickup truck. Their original equipment was limited to a welding machine, pumps, shovels and brooms. The business thrived and in 1986 Kern bought out his partner while continuing to expand the work. In 1995 the company purchased its first dry dock and in 1996 the name was changed to Chicago Dry Dock, Inc. In December 2014, TPG Mt. Vernon Marine, LLC (owned by TPG Marine Enterprises) purchased the company and changed the name slightly to TPG Chicago Dry Dock. In 2017 the addition of a third full-size dry dock gave the facility the capacity to drydock 300-foot/30,000 barrel tank barges: a service never before offered in Chicagoland.
